Dee Alexander: A Gift of Light and Love
Homage to Light Henry Huff

Friday, June 15, 2007 @ 7:30 PM
Jazz Links Student Ensemble @ 7:00 pm
Columbus Park Refectory
5701 W. Jackson Boulevard

Vocalist Dee Alexander is one of Chicago's hidden treasures. Known as a "musician's musician"
she's capable of tuning her instrument in myriad ways.  Her tribute to Light Henry Huff is comprised of
songs the Chicago saxophonist had written for her before he passed away several years ago. In
addition to being a creative musician and composer, Huff was a one-man spiritual center and
shamanistic healer who practiced traditional medicine from a variety of cultures.  Alexander will be
accompanied by cellist Tomeka Reid, violinist James Sanders, harpist Rashida Black and drummer
Ernie Adams.

Freelance journalist David Whiteis describes the indescribable: "Alexander's scatting is supple and
impish, her tone can turn on a dime from sultry croon to nasal sneer, and out of nowhere she'll plunge
into a deliciously dirty growl like a tailgate trombone. She applies her pinpoint intonation to a relaxed,
bluesy romp or deconstructs feminine vulnerability, mocking little-girl-lost bathos in a playful, mewling
soprano."

She began working with Huff in the early 80s in a group called Breath which explored creative
improvisational music.  She has since worked with a vast range of musicians including Orbert Davis'
Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble.  Alexander's Light Henry Huff
project has been long in the making-it is a gift back to a musical and spiritual mentor-one whose time
in Chicago influenced a whole community of musicians.

The concert will be outdoors in the beautiful Columbus Park Refectory where warm summer breezes
and spring foliage will create the perfect setting for strings and voice.  The concert will open with the
Jazz Institute's Jazz Links Student Ensemble;  an inspiring group of young musicians from throughout
the Chicago.

JazzCity is a collaboration initiated by the Jazz Institute of Chicago with the Chicago Park District in
1997.  Over the years we have partnered to present something for everyone-from Jazz Masters Von
Freeman and Willie Pickens to a Jazz and Basketball improvisation with a hip hop poet, from classic
big bands to a tribute to Chicago's poet/lyricist Oscar Brown Jr.  Many young Chicago musicians have
made their public debut with JazzCity and gone on to national repute, and several established
musicians have presented projects on a grand scale.  Numerous JazzCity projects have gone from the
neighborhood parks to the grand stages at Millennium Park and the Chicago Jazz Festival.  Come
celebrate the past, present and future of jazz in Chicago!

All programs are family friendly and free- seating may be limited. For more information, please call

The Chicago Jazz and Heritage Program is a program of the Chicago Park District and the Jazz

the Richard Driehaus Foundation and the Chicago Community Trust.

About Jazz Institute of Chicago

The Jazz Institute of Chicago was founded in 1969 by a small band of jazz fans, writers, club owners
and musicians who came together to preserve the historical roots of the Chicago's music and to
ensure that opportunities for the music to be heard would not be lost in a time when rock was
subsuming cultural economics.  From the Annual Jazz Fair that we began in 1979 to the Chicago Jazz
Festival which we began programming in 1979, to the hundreds of concerts and programs presented
all over the city, we have sought to open peoples' ears to new music by standing the familiar and the
unfamiliar side by side.

Subject: Help Gina Run a Triathalon!!!
 Dear Friends and Family,

Yes, that is right! I am swimming and biking and running in a triathalon in Chicago this
summer with the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society's Team in Training.  This is a major
fundraiser to help support cancer research and provide emotional help to those
suffering with blood and bone cancers. Training started in March and has us either
swimming, biking or runnning 6 days a week!

I am doing the triathalon in honor of my cousin, Jesse, who was diagnosed with
non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last year. In order to participate with the training group, we are
all expected to raise funds which go to the Lyphoma and Leukemia Society. Any amount
that you could donate would be a great help (and tax deductible).

Please visit my website at this link: http://www.active.com/donate/tntil/tntilGSmith1  and
make a donation to help sponsor my triathalon! :)  It would also be great if you would
forward on this email and link to your friends and family, so we can reach others who
would be willing to help.

To those in my email list who receive this twice, my apologies. Maybe that means you
should donate twice?!?
I hope everyone has a great summer and l look forward to catching up with all of you!

Thanks so much for the help,
Gina  :o}
